What To Do When Your Mexico Immigration Card Goes Missing

When you visit Mexico by air, you’ll fill out a standard immigration card that looks like this.

Image from CancunMap

Once you clear immigration the airport, the Immigration Officer detaches the bottom portion of the immigration form and give it back to you along with your passport.

MUI IMPORTANTE!! Don’t throw away this card. Keep it safe. You’ll need to surrender this card upon departure.

What happens if you lose it or throw it away?

It’s not the end of the world, but you’ll have to go through a long process to get a replacement card. That’s exactly what I did at the Mexico City airport. Oops.

If you lost or misplaced your Mexico immigration card, here’s what you need to do.

Step 1: Check in to your flight to get your boarding pass

You’ll have to have a boarding pass in order to receive a replacement immigration card. Check in first. Tell the check in staff that you don’t have your immigration card so they can direct you to the immigration office in the terminal.

Step 2: Take out 390 pesos

To receive a replacement, you must pay a 390 peso fee in CASH and only in pesos. No change is given.

There are a few ATMs in Terminal 2. The closest one is Citibanamex next to Krispy Kreme. There’s also an ATM in the food court as well as currency exchange booths in Terminal 2.

Step 3: Go to the immigration office at the airport

In Terminal 2, next to the security line near Maison Kayser — otherwise known as the north side of the terminal or the “right-hand” side if you’re entering the terminal.

Step 4: Sign in and wait your turn

Go into the immigration office and sign in and queue up. The whole process at this point takes the immigration officer about 5 minutes for each passenger. You can estimate your wait time based on that figure and how many officers are working.

Step 5: Talk to an immigration office and fill out a new immigration form

The immigration officer will give you a new FMM immigration form to fill out. Be sure you have your passport number and where you stayed in Mexico on hand.

The officer will make a copy of your passport and fill some other forms. You’ll need to sign both the immigration form and also the other one sheet form that states why you were so stupid and lost your immigration card.

Pay the fee and you’re done-zo.

Step 6: Get to your flight!

If you’re going internationally, the security line is right at the entrance of the immigration office.
